World of Wisdom
Wisdom of the Mishnah and the Tractate of Avot
When ten sit together and occupy themselves with Torah, the Shechinah (divine presence) abides among them.
And he who learns from the old, to what is he compared? To one who eats ripe grapes.
Love work and hate acting the superior.
You are not obligated to finish the work, but neither are you at liberty to neglect it.
For one commandment leads to another commandment, and transgression leads to another transgression.
Everything is foreseen yet freedom of choice is granted, and the world is judged with goodness.
It is not in our power [to explain the reason for] the tranquility of the wicked, nor even for the afflictions of the righteous.
Appoint for thyself a teacher and avoid doubt.
Envy, lust, and [the desire for] honor put a man out of the world.
Let the honor of your friend be as dear to you as your own.
Who is wise? He who learns from every man.
Do not be like servants who serve their master with the expectation of receiving a reward.
Pray for the welfare of the government.
Judge all men with the scale weighted in their favor.
Make your [study of the] Torah a fixed practice; speak little, but do much.
Be careful [in your dealings] with the ruling authorities for they do not befriend a person except for their own needs.
The world stands on three things: On justice, on truth, and on peace.
Let the property of your fellow be as precious unto you as your own.
The world stands upon three things: Torah, Temple service, and practicing acts of piety.
Let the honor of your student be as dear to you as your own.
Know from where you come, and where you are going, and before whom you are destined to give an account and reckoning.
Whoever fulfills the Torah out of a state of poverty, his end will be to fulfill it out of a state of wealth.
A single moment of repentance and good deeds in this world is greater than all of the world to come.
Humility leads to fear of sin. Fear of sin leads to piety.
Every gathering that is for the sake of heaven will in the end endure.
