2 Samuel, Chapter 8

David Amasses Many Impressive Victories

David celebrates one victory after another. He strikes the Philistines, the Moabites, the Arameans, the Edomites, and other past enemies of Israel. His conquests bring prosperity to his realm. David never forgets that God is the true source of his blessings and power—and God therefore stands by his side. The new king establishes a transparent and just regime, keeping God’s commandments diligently, upholding high moral standards, and helping marginalized social groups. David’s actions go far and beyond the requirements of divine law. For this reason, God continues to guide him and stand by his side.

“Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus: and the Syrians became servants to David, and brought gifts. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadadezer, and brought them to Jerusalem” (2 Samuel 8:6-7)

“And he put garrisons in Edom; throughout all Edom put he garrisons, and all they of Edombecame David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David whithersoever he went. And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people” (2 Samuel 8:14-15)

Awe is the experience of perceiving the presence of the Creator; also known as “fear of God”, or reverence.
