Wisdom of Rabbi Yose ben Judah

- א י ע -

And he who learns from the old, to what is he compared? To one who eats ripe grapes.

“Rabbi Yose ben Judah, a man of Kfar Ha-babli, said: He who learns from the young, to what is he compared? To one who eats unripe grapes, and drinks wine from his vat. And he who learns from the old, to what is he compared? To one who eats ripe grapes, and drinks old wine. Rabbi said: Don’t look at the container but at what is in it. There is a new container full of old wine, and an old [container] in which there is not even new [wine].”

Tractate of Avot 4:20

Someone who learns from a young person is like someone who eats raw fruit. The knowledge consumed is premature. Conversely, learning from experienced individuals is akin to eating ripe grapes, or drinking aged wine. In other words, it is important to listen to those who have lived longer than us. Furthermore, we must see reality for what it is and what it can become, rather than letting our egos deceive us. We should also not be led astray by appearances, but instead strive to discover the essencea young person can at times be wiser than someone who is old but vain.

Restraint is the time taken after an impulse to restrict negative thoughts and behaviors.
