Samson Brings Down the Pillars of the Palace

Samson comes to the house of a prostitute in Gaza. News of his whereabouts reach the Philistines, who wait for him by the gates of the city at night. However, Samson wakes up, tears the gates loose, and carries them with him to a hill nearby Hebron. Some time afterward, Samson falls in love with yet another Philistine woman, this time from the Sorek Valley—Delilah. After being offered a bribe, Delilah begs her lover three times to reveal his most intimate secret—the source of his superhuman strength. Samson lies to her each time, falsely ascribing his strength to different things. Each time, he gives her instructions for something else she must do to him in his sleep. Delilah diligently follows his instructions and yet, each time, Samson’s strength remains intact. The fourth time she asks, he reveals to her that his hair is the source of his power. The rulers of the Philistines pay Delilah what they had promised. She cuts Samson’s hair, draining him of his strength. Samson is then seized, his eyes gouged out, and his hands bound in bronze shackles. He is forced to grind grain in prison.

Samson is brought to entertain and be ridiculed by the guests. Though he is blind and disoriented, Samson’s hair has already begun to grow back. His strength restored one last time, Samson pulls down the pillars of the palace to which he is tied. He causes the building to collapse and buries his enemies—and himself—under the rubble. Samson accepts his fate submissively. He devotes himself to his missionwhich is to smite the Philistines, Israel’s most bitter enemy. In his last hour, Samson strikes the Philistines once more

“when she pressed him daily with her words, and urged him, so that his soul was vexed unto death; That he told her all his heart” (Judges 16:16-17)

“and she caused him to shave off the seven locks of his head… and his strength went from him” (Judges 16:19)
