Wisdom of Rabbi Pinehas ben Ya’ir

Humility leads to fear of sin. Fear of sin leads to piety.

“Torah study leads to care in the performance of mitzvot. Care in the performance of mitzvot leads to diligence in their observance. Diligence leads to cleanliness of the soul. Cleanliness of the soul leads to abstention from all evil. Abstention from evil leads to purity. Purity leads to holiness. Holiness leads to humility. Humility leads to fear of sin. Fear of sin leads to piety. Piety leads to the Divine Spirit. The Divine Spirit leads to the resurrection of the dead.”

Babylonian Talmud, Tractate of Avodah Zarah 20b.

A balanced life is made up of several truths that every person must remember and revisit, lest they are erased from their memory due to oblivion or laziness. We must dream about the best life we can live and work towards making it a reality. To become saintly and righteous, we must first master cautiousness, restraint, purity, piety, and humility, and abandon our sinful ways.

Nobility is adopting and practicing good traits, enabling us to rise to the highest levels of humanity.
